António Dulcídio was born
in Portugal in 1959. He begins painting with 12 year
old. With an academic background in Marketing and
Advertising, studied art at the National Society of Fine
Arts in Lisbon. He is the founder and President of the
Galeria Aberta - Artists Association. He defines Art as
communication, dream, emotions, protest, aesthetic, and
the ultimate human realization. "The good things in
life, are made with art". The need to communicate and
personal fulfillment is what he needs to create.
Inspired by the emotions, but more importantly, Dulcídio
find his personal balance when creating a painting. From
the public expects to understand the message of this
work and receive criticism. The indifference of public
bothers him most. He is the manager of galeriaaberta.org, galeriaaberta.com, and galeriaaberta.ning.com.
Represented in several collections: Portugal, Spain and
Denmark.

I admire this artist for the meticulous way of painting. He
chooses bright colours but not phosphorescent and unpleasant
to the eye. He knows how to place the elements and places
very well the colours. He is aware of the proportions
without artificiality. He chooses the backgrounds carefully
by illuminating them in order to bring the main subject to
the foreground of the painting. Master Ângelo Vaz

António Dulcídio is an excellent painter. He knows how to
transmit to reality something mysterious, different, where
it is possible to read strong messages. I deeply admire this
kind of artists who depict on canvas their interior.
Congratulations António. “Guilherme d'Almeida”.
2009 –
Commentary by Guilherme D'Almeida regarding the
Jellyfish serial . “It is not easy to comment on this
excellent triptych. When the black colour is said to
represent a lack of light, it is not true, as it isn´t true
that it is a sad, gloomy shade, it could be all this if seen
on its own. In this work, António, had the creativity to use
it with another meaning - the depths of the ocean - with
something mystic from where living species arise,
transparent with incredibly beautiful shades; they move in
different directions as if they were dancing. ”Fraguial”

– Article published in the magazine “Niram Art” A Ñ O I I I,
N º 1 0, 2 0 0 8, about the work "Solitary woman":"A maze of
gray tones allows us to get inside the mind of the artist,
and the stairs of the overlap of dark tones, climbed up the
core of the work. A female figure, back painted, an imposing
figure, immortalized as a statue of mud still wet. We can
still feel the smell of wet earth, is the ancestral figure
of the woman, the wife-mother, the woman-lover, his
wife-muse. Prehistoric statue of a pagan god, patiently
placed in a surreal environment. Here is the mystery and the
originality of the Portuguese plastic artist, who knows how
to surprise with each screen.
The sweet sadness of a lost song, subtly brought to the
painting by Dulcídio. In the words of the artist, he paints
"Moments - fugitive youth, looking to the colourful future

2003 -
“A surrealist painter who wants to paint the truth.
Contradiction? The surrealism is not a lie; it is simply
what is not understood by the rational beings. Through
realism, António Dulcídio criticizes. Through surrealism, he
dreams. He would like people to buy just what is useful. Art
for example. He asks for respect in the markets, on the
streets, in the day-to-day life of the Portuguese people.
And he awaits for a citizenship education policy. Or better
Education policy to educate the people. Surrealisms...“.
Interview for the weekly journal "O Norte Desportivo"
published in October, 18th 2003 .

”As Dulcídio is greatly influenced by the river Douro and by
the people settled along its margins, some of these
landscapes and occurrences marked his sensibility towards
Art. Dulcídio paints what he sees and dreams with what he
paints, transporting his ideas about colour and fantasy to
the canvas. He shows us a set of surrealistic forms and in
this line of thinking I risk saying that the artist´s work
is inevitably witness of time. The artist intends to
transmit the colour of the moment through creative work of
surrealist grandiosity. "Clarisse Antunes".
